Kerrang! The Album (1994) was my first introduction to modern heavy metal music and one of the tracks on this was my first introduction to Pantera. The sound was very different to anything I’d heard before and it wasn’t long before I was hooked on their most successful album Vulgar Display of Power. This is one of the many tracks that I like a lot but is one of my favourites.
Lyrics
If ever words were spoken Painful and untrue I said I loved but I lied In my life All I wanted Was the keeping Of someone like you As it turns out Deeper within me Love was twisted and pointed at you
You keep this love (thing), love (child), love (toy) You keep this love (fist), love (scar), love (break) You keep this love, love, love You keep this love, love, love You keep this love
I’d been the tempting one Stole her from herself This gift in pain Her pain was life And sometimes I feel so sorry I regret this (the hurting of you) But you make me so unhappy I’d take my life (and leave love with you)
You keep this love (thing), love (child), love (toy) You keep this love (fist), love (scar), love (break) You keep this love, love, love You keep this love, love, love You keep this love
No more head trips
You keep this love (thing), love (child), love (toy) You keep this love (fist), love (scar), love (break) You keep this love, love, love You keep this love, love, love You keep this love
You keep this love You keep this love You keep this love You keep this love
Rammstein are the original NDH (Neue Deutsche Härte/New German Hardness) rock band creating a bizarre mix of heavy metal and Electronic/Techno styles and instruments. The songs are also typically sung in German as the genre developed in Germany and Austria in the 90s. Until I looked up the lyrics for this post I’d no idea what they meant but it really doesn’t matter. This one is all about the sound – it shouldn’t work but it does!

For many AC/DC’s standout single is Thunderstruck. It gets a lot of attention for the thumping bass, drums and guitar riffs and rightly so. However, this unreleased title track in my opinion, is equally as good if not even better than Thunderstruck. The guitar on this beats anything else I’ve heard from AC/DC.
Lyrics
There’s fighting on the left And marching on the right Don’t look up in the sky You’re gonna die of fright
Here comes the razor’s edge
You’re living on the edge Don’t know wrong from right They’re breathing down your neck You’re running out of lives
And here comes the razor’s edge Here comes the razor’s edge
The razor’s edge
(Razor’s edge) To raise the dead (Razor’s edge) To cut to shreds
To raise the dead
Here comes the razor’s edge Here comes the razor’s edge
Well, here it comes To cut to shreds The razor’s edge
It’s the razor’s edge On the razor’s edge That you’ll be cut to shreds Got a razor’s edge By the razor’s edge
Eminem pushing as many buttons as possible and trying to create controversy to sell records as only he can do. I’m not usually a fan of hip hop or rap but there’s something about this album that I keep coming back to.
Lyrics
America, hahaha, we love you How many people are proud to be citizens Of this beautiful country of ours, the stripes and the stars For the rights that men have died for to protect? The women and men who have broke their necks For the freedom of speech The United States government has sworn to uphold (Yo, I want everybody to listen to the words of this song) Or so we’re told
I never would’ve dreamed in a million years I’d see So many motherfuckin’ people who feel like me Who share the same views and the same exact beliefs It’s like a fucking army marching in back of me
So many lives I touched, so much anger aimed In no particular direction, just sprays and sprays And straight through your radio waves, it plays and plays ‘Til it stays stuck in your head, for days and days
Who would’ve thought, standing in this mirror, bleaching my hair With some peroxide, reaching for a t-shirt to wear That I would catapult to the forefront of rap like this? How could I predict my words would have an impact like this?
I must’ve struck a chord with somebody up in the office ‘Cause Congress keep telling me I ain’t causing nothin’ but problems And now they’re saying I’m in trouble with the government I’m loving it, I shoveled shit all my life, and now I’m dumping it on
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get
Look at these eyes, baby blue, baby just like yourself If they were brown, Shady’d lose, Shady sits on the shelf But Shady’s cute, Shady knew Shady’s dimples would help Make ladies swoon, baby (ooh, baby) Look at my sales
Let’s do the math, if I was black, I woulda sold half I ain’t have to graduate from Lincoln High School to know that But I could rap, so fuck school, I’m too cool to go back Give me the mic, show me where the fucking studio’s at
When I was underground no one gave a fuck I was white No labels wanted to sign me, almost gave up, I was like “Fuck it, ” until I met Dre, the only one to look past Gave me a chance and I lit a fire up under his ass
Helped him get back to the top, every fan black that I got Was probably his in exchange for every white fan that he’s got Like damn, we just swapped, sitting back looking at shit, wow I’m like my skin is it starting to work to my benefit now? it’s-
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get!
See, the problem is I speak to suburban kids Who otherwise woulda never knew these words exist Whose moms probably woulda never gave two squirts of piss ‘Til I created so much motherfucking turbulence
Straight out the tube, right into your living rooms I came And kids flipped when they knew I was produced by Dre That’s all it took, and they were instantly hooked right in And they connected with me too, because I looked like them
That’s why they put my lyrics up under this microscope Searching with a fine tooth comb, it’s like this rope Waiting to choke, tightening around my throat Watching me while I write this, like, “I don’t like this note”
All I hear is, lyrics, lyrics, constant controversy Sponsors working round the clock to try to stop my concerts early Surely hip-hop was never a problem in Harlem, only in Boston After it bothered the fathers of daughters starting to blossom
So now I’m catching the flak from these activists when they ragging Actin’ like I’m the first rapper to smack a bitch or say “faggot, ” shit Just look at me like I’m your closest pal The posterchild, the motherfucking spokesman now, for-
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get
White America, I could be one of your kids White America, little Eric looks just like this White America, Erica loves my shit I go to TRL, look how many hugs I get
So to the parents of America, I am the Derringer Aimed at little Erica to attack her character The ringleader of this circus of worthless pawns Sent to lead the march right up to the steps of Congress And piss on the lawns of the White House
To burn the – and replace it with a Parental Advisory sticker To spit liquor in the faces of this democracy of hypocrisy Fuck you, Ms. Cheney Fuck you, Tipper Gore Fuck you with the freest of speech This Divided States of Embarrassment will allow me to have Fuck you
Hahaha, I’m just playing, America You know I love you
This was a hidden track on the 2007 album release of Magic and was written as a tribute to Springsteen’s long-time assistant Terry Magovern who passed away in July 2007. Some early Sony releases of the album do not include this hidden track.
Springsteen performed Terry’s Song at Terry Magovern’s memorial service on August 2nd and is reported to have written it the day before when he couldn’t find an appropriate song to sing as a tribute to his friend. It was subsequently added to the album as a hidden track with no listing or details on any merchandise with a 10 sec delay following Devil’s Arcade.
Lyrics
Well they built the Titanic to be one of a kind, but many ships have ruled the seas They built the Eiffel Tower to stand alone, but they could build another if they please Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Egypt, are unique I suppose But when they built you, brother, they broke the mold
Now the world is filled with many wonders under the passing sun And sometimes something comes along and you know it’s for sure the only one Mona Lisa, the David, the Sistine Chapel, Jesus, Mary, and Joe And when they built you, brother, they broke the mold
When they built you, brother, they turned dust into gold When they built you, brother, they broke the mold
They say you can’t take it with you, but I think that they’re wrong ‘Cause all I know is I woke up this morning, and something big was gone Gone into that dark ether where you’re still young and hard and cold Just like when they built you, brother, they broke the mold
Now your death is upon us and we’ll return your ashes to the earth And I know you’ll take comfort in knowing you’ve been roundly blessed and cursed But love is a power greater than death, just like the songs and stories told And when she built you, brother, she broke the mold
That attitude’s a power stronger than death, alive and burning her stone cold When they built you, brother,
A cover version of Michael Jackson’s original hit released in 1988 and on his album “Bad“. One of those rare occasions when a cover version has more appeal for me than the original.
Unlike many other covers from other Nu Metal bands at the time, this was recorded as a compliment rather than a criticism of the original as the band were big fans of Michael Jackson. They initially played a few riffs at a live show and when the crowd went wild for it they played the whole thing and went on to record it on their second album.
Lyrics
As he came into the window Was a sound of a crescendo He came into her apartment He left the bloodstains on the carpet She was sitting at the table He could see she was unable So she ran into the bedroom She was struck down It was her doom
Annie, are you OK? Are you OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? You OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK?
Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK? Will you tell us that you’re OK? There’s a sign at the window That he struck you A crescendo, Annie He came into your apartment He left the bloodstains on the carpet And then you ran into the bedroom
You were struck down It was your doom
Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie?
You’ve been hit by You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal
So they came into the outway It was Sunday What a black day I could made a salutation Sounding heartbeats Intimidations
Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK?
You OK? Are you OK, Annie? Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie?
Annie, are you OK? Will you tell us that you’re OK? There’s a sign at the window That he struck you A crescendo, Annie He came into your apartment He left the bloodstains on the carpet Then you ran into the bedroom You were struck down It was your doom
Annie, are you OK? You OK? Are you OK, Annie?
You’ve been hit by You’ve been struck by A smooth criminal
Annie, are you OK? Will you tell us that you’re OK? There’s a sign at the window That he struck you A crescendo, Annie He came into your apartment He left the bloodstains on the carpet And then you ran into the bedroom You were struck down It was your doom

One of the most successful Rolling Stones singles this for me typifies 60s rock. At the time the use of the sitar was criticised for copying the Beatles but the song would be nothing without it.
Despite the upbeat tone of the music the song is actually about grief and loss.
It has been used multiple times in TV and movie soundtracks as well as video games but I first heard it on “Full Metal Jacket“.
Lyrics
I see a red door And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars And they’re all painted black With flowers and my love Both never to come back
I’ve seen people turn their heads And quickly look away Like a newborn baby It just happens everyday
I look inside myself And see my heart is black I see my red door I must have it painted black
Maybe then, I’ll fade away And not have to face the facts It’s not easy facing up When your whole world is black
No more will my green sea Go turn a deeper blue I could not foresee this thing Happening to you
If I look hard enough Into the setting sun My love will laugh with me Before the morning comes
I see a red door And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes
I wanna see it painted Painted black Black as night Black as coal I wanna see the sun Blotted out from the sky I wanna see it painted, painted, painted Painted black, yeah
The debut single from Linkin Park and also from their debut album. It’s an angry song and at times over the years it has perfectly complemented my mood! A great stress reliever of a song
Lyrics
… I cannot take this anymore I’m saying everything I’ve said before All these words they make no sense I find bliss in ignorance Less I hear the less you’ll say But you’ll find that out anyway Just like before
… Everything you say to me Takes me one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break I need a little room to breathe ‘Cause I’m one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break
… I find the answers aren’t so clear Wish I could find a way to disappear All these thoughts they make no sense I find bliss in ignorance Nothing seems to go away Over and over again Just like before
… Everything you say to me Takes me one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break I need a little room to breathe ‘Cause I’m one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break
… Everything you say to me Takes me one step closer to the edge And I’m about to break I need a little room to breathe ‘Cause I’m one step closer to the edge And I’m about to, break
… Shut up when I’m talking to you Shut up, shut up, shut up Shut up when I’m talking to you Shut up, shut up, shut up Shut up, I’m about to break!
Described as a relaunch of Bon Jovi this is the best known song by the band after their major success in the 1980s. It hit Number 1 on multiple charts and reintroduced the band to a much younger audience.
To me it harks back to the original hits of the 80s but with a more mature and positive vibe. There’s a very obvious reference to “Livin’ On a Prayer” but I also find more subtle references to other hits and albums that I really liked as well as a totally out of place homage to Frank Sinatra!
Lyrics
This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted No silent prayer for faith-departed
And I ain’t gonna be just a face in the crowd You’re gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud
It’s my life It’s now or never But I ain’t gonna live forever I just want to live while I’m alive (It’s my life) My heart is like an open highway Like Frankie said, “I did it my way” I just want to live while I’m alive It’s my life
Yeah, this is for the ones who stood their ground For Tommy and Gina, who never backed down
Tomorrow’s getting harder, make no mistake Luck ain’t even lucky, got to make your own breaks
It’s my life And it’s now or never I ain’t gonna live forever I just want to live while I’m alive (It’s my life) My heart is like an open highway Like Frankie said, “I did it my way” I just want to live while I’m alive ‘Cause it’s my life
Better stand tall when they’re calling you out Don’t bend, don’t break, baby, don’t back down
It’s my life And it’s now or never ‘Cause I ain’t gonna live forever I just want to live while I’m alive (It’s my life) My heart is like an open highway Like Frankie said, “I did it my way” I just want to live while I’m alive
And it’s now or never I ain’t gonna live forever I just want to live while I’m alive (It’s my life) My heart is like an open highway Like Frankie said, “I did it my way” I just want to live while I’m alive ‘Cause it’s my life
This has been released for quite some time now but for some reason I’m only hearing it recently. It must have just hit the Irish charts though as it’s on a lot. When you read or listen to the lyrics it won’t be a surprise that there is an alternative radio version!
I simply love the anger in this song and it starts from the very first word. So many breakup songs are moany, winging, sad pieces of drivel but this just says it as it is…
Fuck you and your mom and your sister and your job…
She’s going for the full on Rock and Roll chick too. She intentionally broke her middle finger in March 2021 and the hospital x-ray image is used as the cover art for the EP.
Lyrics
Fuck you and your mom and your sister and your job And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
I swear I meant to mean the best when it ended Even tried to bite my tongue when you start shit Now you’re textin’ all my friends asking questions They never even liked you in the first place Dated a girl that I hate for the attention She only made it two days, what a connection It’s like you’d do anything for my affection You’re goin’ all about it in the worst ways
I was into you, but I’m over it now And I was tryin’ to be nice But nothing’s getting through, so let me spell it out
A-B-C-D-E, F-U And your mom and your sister and your job And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah A-B-C-D-E, F-U
You said you just needed space and so I gave it When I had nothin’ to say you couldn’t take it Told everyone I’m a bitch, so I became it Always had to put yourself above me
I was into you, but I’m over it now And I was tryin’ to be nice But nothing’s getting through, so let me spell it out
A-B-C-D-E, F-U And your mom and your sister and your job And your craigslist couch and the way your voice sounds Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah A-B-C-D-E, F-U Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah A-B-C-D-E, F-U
And your mom and your sister and your job And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off
