Spring Is Coming

I really love this last week in January. Not only is January almost over and Spring almost here but it’s this week when I really feel the change in day length and that Winter is almost gone.

This last couple of days I’ve been able to see daylight as I’m leaving for work and it’s not quite dark when I’m locking up. Every day now we’re gaining an extra 3-4min of daylight and it shows 😍

For many Spring doesn’t start until March but I prefer the ancient Irish calendar with Spring starting with Imbolc on the 1st of February. Bring it on….

The lengthening day has us up and out by 7 am into the cold dawn, the full moon glowed resplendent in the clear, unmolested skies. I kept my eye on Tika, or at least on her little yellow light that bobbed at her harness and white bush of a tail that she carries like a flag, as we made our way through the park. Like all ladies, she had a mind of her own and would take it into her head to follow some deliciously, interesting new smell.

The gulls rose, almost in unison, from rooftop perches, at the first glow of light in the East, raising in the warm thermals of the town, these masters of flight, circled and cried out at the new morn.

Awake! For Morning in the Bowl of Night
Has flung the Stone that puts the Stars to Flight
And Lo! The Hunter of the East has caught
The Sultan’s Turret in a Noose of Light
    The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Having navigated the Great Circle route and as we returned once more to City Park the gulls were already descending to adorn the rooftops and chimney pots of the old town.

I love to be up and out before the town comes alive with eager-beaver student off to their morning classes.

Although cold and the wind fresh today, after breakfast I will head out on my bicycle – I normally wait until after 9 O’clock when the traffic has quietened, and before the midday rush.

I too have been noticing more light at the end of the day. As a camping enthusiast, I am looking forward to the spring. My ideal situation would be biking to work with a six hour work day. Driving work while it’s still dark makes me anxious to retire within the next five years.
